Learn how to write one of the most common text types!

What is it?

A review is a semi-formal text in which you give your opinion of a specific thing (usually a hotel, a movie, a book, or a product) to a wide audience.

Purpose:

The purpose of a review is to clearly give your opinion and keep your reader engaged as you do so. So remember that, since it is highly biased, you ought to say what you thought of the thing you are reviewing and WHY.

Audience:

The audience is ample (not just one-two highly specific people.) If the audience is just one/two people, NEVER pick the review.

Register

  • Semiformal.

  • Engage the reader

  • Use exclamation marks, words with negative/positive connotations… (show you take a language A course...)

Conventions (include these to get points!):

  1. Title

  2. What you’re reviewing (CONNECT IT WITH HISPANIC CULTURE)

  3. Author

    1. Memorize a Hispanic name to use before the exam. NEVER USE YOUR OWN.

  4. Divided into paragraphs (SL/HL)

  5. 1st person preferably (because it’s YOUR opinion.)

  6. Date

    1. Eg: 2 de diciembre de 2022

Word count:

Ab initio

70-150

SL

250-400

HL

450-600

Structure tips:

  • Regardless of what you’re reviewing, connect it with Hispanic culture. For example, if you’re reviewing a TV show, say the name of a Hispanic one or say you watched one in Spanish.

  • Unless otherwise stated in the prompt, BRIEFLY Summarize whatever you’re reviewing. If you went to a hotel, concisely describe your experience. If you watched a movie, quickly summarize the movie. Essentially, give the examiner a bit of context, but DON’T STORYTELL (you can summarize these things in 1-2 lines.)

    • “Es una película que trata de una madre que busca a su hijo desaparecido, lo que me conmovió como espectador/a.”

  • Clearly state your opinion. Be dramatic and exaggerate. If you’re in HL/SL, this is the perfect place to include some nice subjunctives.

  • Recommend the thing or not. Review specific aspects of it. If you’re in SL/HL, these have to be more in-depth and long.

    • E.g: La comida estaba malísima (the food was horrible).
